Take A Look At Kangana Ranaut's Fierce Portayal Of Indira Gandhi In 'Emergency' Trailer
January 7, 2025: After enduring several delays due to clearance issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the highly anticipated political drama ‘Emergency’, directed by Kangana Ranaut, has finally unveiled its official trailer. The film, which was initially slated for a September 6, 2024 release, is now scheduled to hit theatres on January 17, 2025.
The film, produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, delves into one of the most defining periods in India’s history—the Emergency period of 1975, during which Indira Gandhi, India’s first female Prime Minister, imposed a nationwide state of emergency. The drama explores the events leading up to and during this controversial time, offering a deep dive into the political dynamics and personal struggles of the era.
The trailer opens with Anupam Kher playing Jayaprakash Narayan, who is shown writing a letter to Indira Gandhi from prison. Kangana Ranaut, portraying Indira Gandhi, delivers powerful dialogues such as “Main hi cabinet hun” (I am the cabinet) and “Indira is India,” emphasizing the central role she played in shaping the nation.
Shreyas Talpade plays a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman portrays Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, and Mahima Chaudhary takes on the role of Pupul Jayakar, Gandhi’s close associate. The late Satish Kaushik is also seen in one of his final roles as Jagjivan Ram, a prominent political leader during that time.
Kangana shared the trailer on Instagram, captioning it:
“1975, Emergency — A Defining chapter in Indian History. Indira: India’s most powerful woman. Her ambition transformed the nation, but her #EMERGENCY plunged it into chaos.”
In a press note, Kangana reflected on the journey of bringing the film to life and its significance:
“After a long journey filled with challenges, I’m glad that our film ‘Emergency’ will finally hit the big screen on 17th January. This story isn’t just about a controversial leader; it delves into themes that remain profoundly relevant today, making the journey both difficult and significant. Releasing just a week before Republic Day, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the resilience of our Constitution and experience the film with your loved ones.”
With ‘Emergency’ releasing just before Republic Day, the film offers an opportune moment to reflect on India’s political history and the resilience of its democratic institutions. It is expected to spark both debate and reflection on the legacy of Indira Gandhi and the lasting impact of the Emergency period.
