Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s latest film Thamma has kicked off its theatrical run with a strong start. The horror comedy, part of Maddock Films’ popular Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), made the most of the Diwali holiday on Tuesday, collecting ₹25.11 crore net (₹30 crore gross) in India on its opening day, according to figures shared by Maddock Films.
Box office tracker Sacnilk reported that Thamma began with relatively low occupancy of 15–16% in the morning shows, but witnessed a sharp rise to over 40% by evening as positive word of mouth spread.
Overseas, the film managed to earn just under $250K, a decent figure considering that Diwali is not a public holiday in most international markets. This brings Thamma’s worldwide opening day total to an impressive ₹32 crore.
The film’s debut performance is among the best for a Hindi release in 2025, surpassing Saiyaara (₹30 crore) and outperforming previous MHCU titles such as Stree (₹10 crore), Bhediya (₹12 crore), and Munjya (₹5 crore). However, it still trails behind blockbuster openings like Chhaava (₹47 crore) and Stree 2 (₹80 crore), with the latter holding the record for the biggest opening for an Indian horror film.
