The Bengal Files: Vivek Agnihotri's Film Battles Weekday Dips and Show Cuts
Vivek Agnihotri’s new film, The Bengal Files, has opened to a modest ₹1.75 crore, falling short of its predecessor’s debut. The film is now banking on strong word-of-mouth and a weekend surge to recover its ₹30-35 crore budget.
September 6, 2025: Despite getting mainly good reviews, Vivek Agnihotri’s new movie, The Bengal Files, has not done well at the box office. The third part of Agnihotri’s “Files” trilogy, a socio-political drama, made about ₹1.75 crore on its first day in India.
Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 4, which came out on the same day, did much better, making ₹12 crore. The Conjuring: Last Rites, a Hollywood horror movie, completely outshone both of these movies. It had a huge opening of ₹18 crore.
A Release That Caused a Lot of Talk
There has been a lot of controversy around The Bengal Files, including accusations of a “unofficial ban” on showing it in West Bengal. Vivek Agnihotri, the director of the movie, says that theater owners are being told not to exhibit it in the state. Pallavi Joshi, the producer, even sent an open letter to the President of India about it.
Even though there were problems and the movie didn’t start off well, the people who made it and the people who like it are hopeful that it will do well over the weekend.
They are hoping for good word-of-mouth, just like Agnihotri’s last movie, The Kashmir Files, which had a modest start with a ₹3.55 crore opening day take but went on to become a huge hit with a total gross of over ₹252 crore. Analysts say that the movie’s success will depend on a big increase in ticket sales on Saturday and Sunday.
