The Bengal Files: Gopal Mukherjee’s Grandson Moves Calcutta High Court Against The Release Of The Film

The grandson of historical figure Gopal Mukherjee has filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court seeking a stay on The Bengal Files. He alleges that the film’s trailer distorts his grandfather’s image and is a “ghastly” portrayal.

September 4, 2025: The Calcutta High Court has made a very important decision: it will not delay the release of Vivek Agnihotri’s latest movie, The Bengal Files. Shantanu Mukherjee, the grandson of Gopal Mukherjee, who fought for India’s freedom, filed a petition saying that the movie was not true to his grandpa and was rude. This is why the option was made.

Justice Amrita Sinha heard the appeal on Monday. It wanted the movie to not come out. The court didn’t grant the stay, but it did send a letter to the movie’s director and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The next hearing will be at a different time.

The problem is with Gopal Mukherjee, also known as Gopal Patha. The movie trailer calls him “Ek Tha Kashai Gopal Patha,” which means “Gopal Patha the Butcher.” The individual who filed the petition argued that his grandfather was not a butcher but a well-known wrestler and freedom fighter. He also added that how the movie shows him affects how people think of his family.

There is a legal issue, but others say that the movie will still be in theaters on Friday, September 5, 2025. The Bengal Files is the second movie in Vivek Agnihotri’s “Files” series. It stars Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi. People think it’s about the terrible things that happened on Direct Action Day in 1946.
