“The Crown” Producer Hints at Potential Spinoffs, Teases New Royal Stories

Andy Harries, the executive producer behind Netflix’s acclaimed series The Crown, has recently hinted at the possibility of spinoffs following the show’s successful six-season run. Speaking on a chat show, Harries expressed optimism about the future of the series, suggesting that there is ample room for more royal stories to emerge.

The beloved series, which chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, wrapped up its run at the end of 2023. Created by Peter Morgan, The Crown has been widely praised for its meticulous depiction of the British monarchy, covering a sweeping timeline from Elizabeth’s early marriage in 1947 to the 2005 wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.

Throughout its run, The Crown has featured remarkable portrayals of Queen Elizabeth by Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and Imelda Staunton, each bringing their own unique touch to the role. The series has garnered widespread acclaim and numerous awards, becoming a significant cultural touchstone.

Harries, who also founded Left Bank Pictures—the Sony-backed production company behind the show—revealed that the initial deal for The Crown allowed them to retain the rights to the series. Reflecting on this arrangement, he remarked, “I can assure you [that deal] feels very, very good and it gives us the opportunity to think about what we can do further with The Crown at some point. It’s obviously an endless subject. We could go back or we could go on. We did six seasons, a very defined period of six decades, there’s plenty of potential, which at some point, I suspect we’ll return to.”

Speculation about potential spinoffs has been ongoing. Rumors suggest that additional specials or even films might be in development. According to Deadline, one possible project could delve into the life of Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 to 1910. There were also reports in 2022 that Netflix was exploring discussions with Left Bank Pictures about a prequel.

While Peter Morgan, the series creator, has indicated that he might not be involved in new royal content in the immediate future, stating in late 2023 that “the word palace will not be appearing in anything I write” for now, the door remains open for future projects.

The Crown has achieved significant recognition over its run, with 87 Emmy nominations and 21 wins. The series is once again nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, with notable performances from Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Dominic West, and Claire Foy all receiving nods.

As the series concludes its current chapter, Harries’ comments suggest that the royal saga may not be entirely over, leaving fans hopeful for more narratives from the storied British monarchy.
