January 7, 2025: Fans of the post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us can finally breathe a sigh of relief as Season 2 of the hit series has officially been confirmed for a return in April 2025. The highly anticipated season will consist of seven episodes, continuing the gripping story of survival in a ravaged world.
The announcement came from Neil Druckmann, co-creator and executive producer of the series, who shared the news on social media and during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The exact premiere date will be revealed in the coming weeks.
The Last of Us series, based on the critically acclaimed video game franchise, picks up five years after the events of Season 1. Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) are back, along with Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), as they face new, even more perilous challenges in a world still reeling from the aftermath of the fungal outbreak.
Season 2 will introduce a slew of new characters, most notably Kaitlyn Dever, who will portray Abby — a character featured prominently in a newly released teaser trailer. This 30-second teaser offers a mix of previously seen footage from the first season and fresh glimpses from the upcoming season, including intense moments between Joel and Catherine O’Hara, as well as new faces like Jeffrey Wright and Isabela Merced. Fans can expect darker and more unpredictable twists as the story continues from the shocking conclusion of Season 1.
The official logline for the season reads:
“Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
In addition to the returning core cast, Rutina Wesley will reprise her role as Maria, while several new characters are introduced, played by Young Mazino (Jesse), Ariela Barer (Mel), Tati Gabrielle (Nora), Spencer Lord (Owen), and Danny Ramirez (Manny).
The production continues the collaboration between Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, who are executive producers and writers for the series. The show is produced by Sony Pictures Television, with additional executive producers including Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells. Halley Gross will also return as a co-executive producer and writer.
As the countdown to April 2025 begins, fans can expect an even more intense and emotionally charged continuation of The Last of Us, with new faces and storylines adding to the rich narrative that made the show a breakout hit.
