Actor-singer Gippy Grewal reflected on the evolving landscape of Punjabi cinema, noting the success of high-budget films such as ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ and ‘Carry On Jatta 3’.
Since his acting debut in ‘Mel Karade Rabba’, Grewal has seen significant changes in the industry, particularly in how Punjabi films are now reaching broader audiences and achieving remarkable box office success.
In an interview, Grewal expressed his surprise at ‘Carry On Jatta 3’ grossing over Rs 100 crore worldwide, a milestone that even caught the attention of Bollywood. “I still remember calling Aamir Khan and telling him that this figure was unimaginable…,” Grewal shared. He revealed his initial apprehensions about the film’s success but was pleased with the outcome, indicating robust growth in Punjabi cinema.
Grewal is currently promoting his upcoming film ‘Shinda Shinda No Papa’, which also stars his son alongside actress Hina Khan. He highlighted the increased budgets in recent productions, exemplified by their recent shoot in Canada, which contrasts sharply with the earlier frugality of the industry. Directed by Amarpreet GS Chhabra and written by Naresh Kathooria, ‘Shinda Shinda No Papa’ is a family comedy that showcases the real-life father-son relationship on the big screen. The film is set for release on May 10.
