“They Killed Him”: Nimrat Kaur’s Unheard Story About Her Father’s Martyrdom in Kashmir

May 11, 2025: In the midst of ongoing national security concerns, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, the resilience and courage of the Indian Armed Forces stand as a beacon of hope. These soldiers and their families, who sacrifice so much for the nation’s security, often go unnoticed. One such story is that of actress Nimrat Kaur, whose father, Major Bhupender Singh, a brave army officer, was martyred in 1994 during a terrorist attack in Kashmir.

In a heartfelt interview, Nimrat Kaur shared the harrowing details of her father’s martyrdom. Major Singh, a young army engineer, was posted in the Verinag region, near the India-Pakistan border, at the time. As Nimrat explained, Kashmir was not considered a family station during those years, so she and her family lived in Patiala. However, they were visiting him during the winter vacation in January 1994 when tragedy struck.

Terrorist group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen kidnapped Major Singh from his station and held him captive for seven days. Nimrat shared the heartbreaking reason for his death: “The terrorists made ridiculous demands for the release of certain individuals, which my father refused to comply with, staying true to his duty. He was just 44 when they killed him.”

Nimrat recalled the painful moment when she received the devastating news. She and her family flew back to Delhi with her father’s body, and it was there that she saw him for the first time after his death. The family moved to Noida after the incident, staying with her maternal grandparents for a few months before buying their own home with her father’s pension and their savings.

Major Bhupender Singh’s bravery did not go unnoticed. The government posthumously awarded him the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s highest gallantry awards, for his supreme sacrifice. His legacy is a testament to the bravery of countless soldiers who lay down their lives to protect the nation.

For Nimrat, her father’s story is not just about loss but also about pride. In the face of national security challenges, she continues to remember her father’s sacrifice and the impact of that courage on her life.

On the professional front, Nimrat was recently seen in Sky Force, where she starred alongside Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan, and Veer Pahariya in pivotal roles. Despite the hardships she’s faced, her work continues to inspire audiences, just as her father’s bravery continues to inspire the nation.

Through her father’s memory, Nimrat Kaur’s story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families in protecting the integrity of our country, particularly in the face of terrorism and ongoing threats to national security.
