This Actor Confirms Playing Sourav Ganguly In Biopic

June 25, 2025: After months of speculation, actor Rajkummar Rao has officially confirmed that he will portray former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in the upcoming biographical film. The announcement came shortly after Ganguly himself confirmed the casting.

In an interview, Rajkummar expressed his excitement and nervousness about the role. “Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official – yes, I am playing him in his biopic. I am nervous… It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s going to be a lot of fun,” he said.

Sourav Ganguly, who scored 18,575 runs and 38 centuries in international cricket, believes Rajkummar is the perfect fit for the role. He mentioned the film is slated for a December 2026 theatrical release, with filming scheduled to begin in January 2025. “The pre-production, story writing and scripting takes a lot of time. And shooting doesn’t take that much time. It’s about 3 months and then the post-production takes time,” Ganguly shared.

While the official title and director of the film remain undisclosed, Ganguly has assured support to the actor but declined to lead the project himself. “I think the right person is doing it… I’ll help him with everything,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rajkummar Rao is gearing up for a new Netflix-backed dark comedy, set to begin filming soon in Mumbai. This project will precede his intense preparation for the Ganguly biopic, which reunites him with director Vikramaditya Motwane, known for their previous collaboration on Trapped (2016).

The biopic promises to offer an inspiring look at one of India’s most successful cricket captains, blending sports, drama, and biography, much to the excitement of cricket and cinema fans alike.
