This Is Why Karisma Kapoor Refused Sunjay Kapur’s Offer To Give Up Indian Passport For Portuguese Citizenship
Documents submitted in court reveal that Karisma Kapoor refused her late ex-husband Sunjay Kapur’s offer for Portuguese citizenship, a decision that has now become a central point in the legal battle over his estate. Her lawyer is arguing that this refusal casts suspicion on the will, which allegedly disinherits her children.
September 12, 2025: In a shocking turn of events in the high-profile legal fight over the ₹30,000 crore inheritance of the late billionaire Sunjay Kapur, it has come to light that he was seeking to help his ex-wife Karisma Kapoor and their two children get Portuguese citizenship. But Karisma is said to have turned down the offer, which her lawyer is now using to question the validity of Kapur’s will.
Documents and legal arguments produced in the Delhi High Court say that Sunjay Kapur and Karisma talked on WhatsApp to make it easier for them to get Portuguese citizenship, which would have meant that their children wouldn’t have to pay inheritance tax on his abroad possessions. Karisma’s refusal to give up her Indian citizenship, which is necessary for the Portuguese passport, caused the plan to fall apart.
During the court hearing, Karisma’s senior lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, said that this chain of events raises doubts about Kapur’s will, which was supposedly signed in March 2025. Jethmalani asked why Kapur would be trying to get his kids a tax-saving citizenship in May if a will signed just two months before had already given all of his abroad holdings to his third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, and none to his kids.
The legal dispute has turned into a nasty public fight, and now several family members are in court. Samaira and Kiaan, Karisma’s children, are suing their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, because they say she faked their father’s will to keep them from getting their fair share of the estate. Priya’s lawyers have responded in court by saying that the family trust has already given the kids assets worth ₹1,900 crore. Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya, has accused Karisma of taking a sudden interest in her late ex-husband’s life after a prolonged absence, and highlighted that Priya was Kapur’s legal wife at the time of his death.
Sunjay’s 80-year-old mother, Rani Kapur, has also been involved in the fight. She told the court that she was also left with nothing. Justice Jyoti Singh is in charge of the court, which has told Priya Sachdev to give them a full list of all of Sunjay Kapur’s moveable and immovable properties. The next hearing for the case is set on October 9.
