Thudarum Box Office Day 21: Mohanlal's Thriller Surpasses L2: Empuraan, Enters ₹100 Crore Club in Kerala Alone
May 16, 2025 | Mohanlal’s latest hit Thudarum is rewriting the rules of regional box office success. Directed by Tharun Moorthy, the emotional thriller completed 21 days in theatres with ₹107.5 crore in total domestic collections, officially overtaking the superstar’s previous blockbuster, L2: Empuraan.
Releasing on April 25, the Malayalam-language family drama began with a solid ₹5.25 crore opening, and thanks to stellar word-of-mouth and repeat audiences, it maintained remarkable consistency throughout its third week. On Day 21, the film collected ₹1.61 crore, continuing its stronghold at the Kerala box office.
As per trade tracker Sacnilk, Thudarum has now outperformed L2: Empuraan, which netted ₹105.43 crore in the same timeframe. It also surpassed the likes of Tovino Thomas’s Manjummel Boys and Suriya’s Retro, positioning itself as one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2025—across all languages.

The duo’s on-screen chemistry, last seen decades ago, brought nostalgic weight to this deeply personal story. With subtle storytelling and grounded performances, director Tharun Moorthy delivers a film that has struck a chord across demographics.
Thudarum’s consistent performance has eclipsed big-budget films across states, including Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2 in North India, Suriya’s Retro in Tamil Nadu, and Nani’s HIT 3 in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The film’s crossover appeal and emotional core have given it strong pan-Indian traction.
As Thudarum inches closer to the ₹110 crore mark, it stands as a testament to the rising dominance of Malayalam cinema on the national stage. With no signs of slowing down, the film may well climb into the Top 5 Indian films of 2025.
