With a steep decline in collections and poor word-of-mouth, the ₹200 crore gangster drama is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest disasters
June 18, 2025 – What was once touted as one of the biggest cinematic events of 2025 has turned into a major box office catastrophe. Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life has collapsed commercially, with domestic net collections now unlikely to cross even the ₹50 crore mark—against a staggering reported budget of over ₹200 crore.
Day 12 Collection: Just ₹35 Lakh in India
According to early estimates by Sacnilk, Thug Life earned a paltry ₹35 lakh on its second Monday, a massive 61.11% drop from Sunday’s ₹90 lakh. The figure is 44 times lower than its opening day collection of ₹15.5 crore on June 5. This sharp plunge reflects the film’s complete rejection by audiences, despite the star power of Kamal Haasan and the prestige of Mani Ratnam.
The total domestic net collection now stands at ₹46 crore, with little sign of recovery in sight.
Occupancy Report – Tamil Market (Day 12):
- Overall occupancy: 16.45%
- Morning shows: 14.80%
- Afternoon: 16.03%
- Evening: 16.81%
- Night: 18.16%
Worse Than Indian 2, Game Changer & Kanguva
Despite receiving relatively better critical feedback than Indian 2, Game Changer, or Kanguva, Thug Life has been outperformed by all three at the box office:
| Film | Day 12 Earnings | Worldwide Gross |
|---|---|---|
| Indian 2 (Kamal Haasan) | ₹1.25 crore | ₹148.83 crore |
| Game Changer (Ram Charan) | ₹1 crore | ₹186.25 crore |
| Kanguva (Suriya) | ₹47 lakh | ₹106.25 crore |
| Thug Life | ₹35 lakh | ₹95.5 crore (so far) |
Despite an aggressive marketing campaign and the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after decades, Thug Life has failed to strike a chord with audiences. Its sharp drop in earnings and bleak occupancy trends suggest it may not even break even through digital or satellite sales, cementing its status as one of Indian cinema’s most high-profile box office disasters of recent years.

Unless an unexpected turnaround occurs, Thug Life seems destined to be remembered more for its hype than its impact.
