Thunderbolts Director Jake Schreier in Early Talks to Helm Marvel’s Next X-Men Movie

May 9, 2025: Marvel Studios may have found its director for the next X-Men film. Jake Schreier, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Thunderbolts, is reportedly in early talks to take the helm of the upcoming X-Men movie, according to a report from Variety. While the deal is not yet finalized, Schreier is said to be at the top of Disney and Marvel’s wishlist after the success of Thunderbolts, which has emerged as one of the most well-reviewed MCU entries in recent years.

The screenplay for the highly anticipated project has been written by Michael Lesslie, known for his work on The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is set to produce. However, no official details—including the film’s cast, plot, or release timeline—have been confirmed as of now.

Jake Schreier’s directing credits prior to Thunderbolts include the 2012 sci-fi drama Robot & Frank, the 2015 romantic comedy Paper Towns, and episodes of hit series like Netflix’s Beef and the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Meanwhile, Thunderbolts continues to generate excitement in theatres. The film stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and focuses on a team of superhumans learning to function together in a post-Avengers world. A new character, “Bob,” shakes up their dynamic as they face an escalating threat.

Florence Pugh, who portrays Yelena Belova, recently made headlines for her bold attempt to perform a daring stunt herself—leaping off Merdeka 118, the second-tallest building in the world. Pugh revealed she personally reached out to Kevin Feige to express her desire to do the stunt without a double. Although insurance issues ultimately prevented it, her commitment to the role impressed fans and filmmakers alike.

Marvel has not yet officially confirmed Schreier’s attachment to the X-Men project, but the development signals a new chapter in the studio’s evolving superhero universe.
