‘Thunderbolts’ Leads Box Office Again, While ‘Sinners’ Surges Past $200M Domestic Milestone*
May 11, 2025: Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts is holding the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend, adding $9 million on Friday and pushing its North American total past $100 million. The superhero ensemble is expected to finish the weekend with over $130 million, despite a 53% drop from its debut.
The film is performing better than other recent MCU entries, including Captain America: Brave New World, which plummeted by over 68% in its second frame. Positioned between Shang-Chi ($119M in eight days) and Eternals ($99M), Thunderbolts is showing greater staying power — a critical achievement given its $180 million production budget and an additional $100 million in marketing costs.

If current trends hold, Thunderbolts will record the eighth-best second weekend hold among the 36 MCU titles.
Warner Bros.’ Sinners added $6.5 million on Friday, pushing it past the $200 million domestic mark on Saturday. The original thriller is now the second-highest grossing North American release of 2025, trailing only A Minecraft Movie, and it continues to defy expectations with minimal week-to-week drops.

As it enters its fourth weekend, Sinners is expected to surpass Wedding Crashers ($209M) and soon break into the top 20 highest-grossing R-rated films of all time in North America.
In third place, A Minecraft Movie brought in $1.9 million on Friday, marking a 37% drop from the previous week. With a $402 million domestic total and a global tally set to exceed $900 million this weekend, the video game adaptation is quickly climbing the all-time box office charts.
Amazon MGM’s The Accountant 2 earned $1.67 million on Friday. Now in its third weekend, the action sequel is tracking toward a $50.8 million domestic total, about 20% behind the 2016 original. Given its significantly higher production cost, the film’s performance remains underwhelming.
IFC and Shudder’s horror entry Clown in a Cornfield opened in 2,277 theaters and earned $1.69 million across Friday and previews. Though it received praise at SXSW, a CinemaScore of “C+” may dampen long-term legs. It’s currently pacing slightly ahead of Shudder’s 2023 hit Late Night With the Devil.
