Thunderbolts Stumbles At Box Office With One Of MCU's Worst First Mondays

Marvel Studios’ latest release Thunderbolts, now rebranded as The New Avengers, has hit a major speed bump at the box office. Earning just $5 million on its first Monday, the film is now among the three worst-performing Monday openings in MCU history, only faring better than The Marvels and Eternals.
Despite an all-star ensemble featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell, the film suffered a steep 71.9% drop from Sunday’s numbers — a much sharper decline than past MCU titles like Ant-Man and the Wasp (-57.6%) and The Incredible Hulk (-61.4%).

So far, Thunderbolts has grossed $79.3 million in the U.S., making it one of the higher earners of 2025, despite the early-week slump. Industry insiders suggest the rebranding as “The New Avengers”, revealed during the end credits, could help draw more viewers in the long run, as the film sets the stage for the MCU’s next phase.
Originally scheduled for release in 2024, Thunderbolts faced delays due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which impacted both filming and the cast lineup. Nevertheless, the film has been praised for its action sequences, emotional stakes, and character arcs, offering hope that strong word of mouth and overseas markets could improve its overall run.
As the final installment of MCU Phase Five, the film is crucial in shaping the franchise’s next direction. With more Phase Six announcements expected later this year, fans remain hopeful Thunderbolts will prove its value as a slow-burn box office success.
