Thunderbolts Stumbles At Box Office With One Of MCU’s Worst First Mondays

Despite strong reviews and a star-studded cast, the Marvel film earns just $5M on Monday, trailing The Marvels and Eternals in early domestic performance.

Marvel Studios’ latest release Thunderbolts, now rebranded as The New Avengers, has hit a major speed bump at the box office. Earning just $5 million on its first Monday, the film is now among the three worst-performing Monday openings in MCU history, only faring better than The Marvels and Eternals.

Despite an all-star ensemble featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell, the film suffered a steep 71.9% drop from Sunday’s numbers — a much sharper decline than past MCU titles like Ant-Man and the Wasp (-57.6%) and The Incredible Hulk (-61.4%).

Current Domestic Performance

So far, Thunderbolts has grossed $79.3 million in the U.S., making it one of the higher earners of 2025, despite the early-week slump. Industry insiders suggest the rebranding as “The New Avengers”, revealed during the end credits, could help draw more viewers in the long run, as the film sets the stage for the MCU’s next phase.
