Tilda Swinton Announces Break From Acting, Won’t Be Shooting Films For Rest Of 2025

February 15, 2025: Tilda Swinton, the renowned actress known for her roles in films like Michael Clayton, The Deep End, and Vanilla Sky, has announced that she will be taking a break from acting for the rest of the year. This announcement comes shortly after Swinton received the prestigious Golden Bear award for lifetime achievement at the 75th Berlin Film Festival on Thursday.

During her speech at the event, Swinton revealed her desire to take a much-needed break from the demanding world of filmmaking. She stated that she has been under the intense pressure of the industry for quite some time and is looking forward to a period of rest and personal growth. “I need a break, and I’m going to have one,” she said. Swinton mentioned that after returning to her home in Scotland, she would begin a new chapter of her life focused on something she has been anticipating for the past 15 years. Though she kept the details of her plans under wraps, she confirmed she wouldn’t be shooting any films for the remainder of the year.

In addition to her personal break, Swinton shared that she would be dedicating time to developing several projects. Some of these projects are related to cinema, while others lie outside the film industry. She also expressed her thoughts on how the film industry’s landscape has changed since the pandemic, particularly for indie filmmakers. According to Swinton, the pressure on actors and filmmakers in independent cinema has increased, especially when it comes to securing finances. “Since Covid, that has been, ‘No, the money is here now and we have to do it,'” she explained, highlighting the increased urgency and financial instability in the industry.

Swinton’s announcement comes as she continues to receive critical acclaim for her role in Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door (2024), which marks the Spanish director’s English-language feature debut. Swinton stars alongside Julianne Moore in this much-anticipated film.

Her decision to take a break from acting marks an important moment in her career as she reflects on her journey and explores new avenues outside of filmmaking.
