Timothée Chalamet Talks Fame And Activism, Reflects On Bob Dylan's Influence
February 15, 2025: Timothée Chalamet, currently nominated for an Oscar for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, recently discussed how playing the legendary singer has shaped his own perspective on fame, activism, and politics.
During a press conference following the film’s premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, Chalamet opened up about the influence of Dylan’s music on his understanding of cult-like figures and the importance of caution when it comes to individuals who present themselves as “saviors.”
Chalamet reflected on how Bob Dylan’s songs, particularly his protest anthems, served as warnings against idolizing any one person or figure. “I think it’s in the nature of his music, the warnings against cult-like figures. And I think that Bob was very true too—I won’t speak for him because he’s alive and well in Malibu—but my interpretation is just wary of any savior-like figures… Anyone who says they have a solution, be wary,” Chalamet explained, adding that this message also aligns with themes from Frank Herbert’s Dune.
As Chalamet continues his campaign for an Academy Award, his unique approach to promoting A Complete Unknown has included interviews with internet personalities like Nardwuar, Brittany Broski, and Theo Von. He also hosted Saturday Night Live and performed a mix of Bob Dylan’s deep cuts as part of his ongoing awards push.
Based on the book Dylan Goes Electric by Elijah Wald, A Complete Unknown follows Dylan’s rise to fame leading up to his groundbreaking electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. The film also stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, and Boyd Holbrook. Along with Chalamet’s Oscar nomination for Best Actor, the film has received nominations for Best Picture, Director (James Mangold), Best Supporting Actor (Edward Norton), Best Supporting Actress (Monica Barbaro), Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and Sound.
