Tina Knowles Reveals The Reason Why She Put Beyoncé and Solange In Therapy as Children

April 27, 2025: Music icon Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, recently shared a touching story about her decision to put her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, in therapy during their childhood. In an interview with CNN, Tina revealed that the move was a proactive step to prevent a potential rift between the two sisters as their lives and careers began to head in different directions.

“I saw a little wall starting to build between them,” Tina said, explaining how Beyoncé’s early success in music, especially being part of a singing group, created a dynamic where Solange was occasionally left out. According to Tina, Beyoncé sometimes allowed others in her circle to treat Solange dismissively — not intentionally, but in a way that made Solange feel sidelined.

To address these issues before they grew larger, Tina sought professional help, despite initial hesitation from her then-husband, Matthew Knowles. She found a child therapist who worked with both girls, helping them talk through their feelings and strengthen their relationship.

Tina noted that while Beyoncé “hated going” to therapy, Solange “loved it” and found it liberating to express herself openly. “The outcome was great,” Tina added, highlighting the strong bond the sisters share today.

During the interview, Tina also spoke about raising her “bonus daughter” Kelly Rowland, and emphasized the importance of understanding each child’s unique needs and personalities. She underlined the value of individual attention, saying, “Each child deserves their own time and space.”

Tina’s revelations come as part of the promotion for her recently released memoir, which also touches on her personal battles, including her fight with breast cancer. The book dives deep into her journey as a mother, mentor, and survivor.
