Tom Cruise Honoured With US Navy’s Highest Civilian Award

December 18, 2024: Tom Cruise’s recognition with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award is a significant honor, reflecting the profound impact his films, particularly Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, have had on both popular culture and the U.S. Navy. Presented by Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, this prestigious award is the highest recognition a civilian can receive outside of the Navy, underscoring the importance of Cruise’s contributions.

Cruise’s relationship with the Navy began with his iconic role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 1986 classic Top Gun, a film that not only highlighted the skill and bravery of naval aviators but also became a cultural touchstone. His return to the Top Gun franchise with Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, both as an actor and a producer, brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm for naval aviation. The sequel not only brought nostalgia to older audiences but also introduced a new generation to the values and skills associated with the Navy. As a result of this portrayal, Cruise was even named the U.S. Navy’s 36th Honorary Naval Aviator, an unprecedented honor for a civilian.

During the award ceremony, which took place at Longcross Film Studios in Surrey, England, Cruise gave a heartfelt speech, reflecting on his core belief: “To lead is to serve.” He expressed deep gratitude for the honor, emphasizing the collective effort of the cast and crew who helped bring these stories to life, and recognizing the significance of inspiring generations of service members. His words resonated with his longstanding commitment to portraying military service with respect and admiration.

The Navy’s recognition of Cruise comes after decades of advocacy for the armed forces, particularly through his portrayal of military figures in films. His work has inspired many viewers, including sailors and Marines, to consider a career in the Navy. In this way, Cruise’s films have played a part in shaping perceptions of the military and inspiring individuals to serve their country.

Notably, Cruise is following in the footsteps of other Hollywood legends like Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who received the DPS Award for their work on Saving Private Ryan (1998), a film that also honored military service and heroism during World War II.

As for the future, Cruise’s involvement in the Top Gun franchise is far from over. The actor is reportedly working on Top Gun 3, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirming the development in March 2024. Additionally, Cruise is gearing up for his role in the upcoming Mission: Impossible movie, The Final Reckoning, set for release in May 2025.

Cruise’s enduring legacy in both the film industry and his influence on the military will likely continue, as he remains a key figure in action films that resonate deeply with audiences and the armed forces alike.
