‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Director Joseph Kosinski Set To Direct ‘Miami Vice’ Remake For Universal Pictures

April 29, 2025: Joseph Kosinski, the director behind the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, is set to helm a new Miami Vice remake for Universal Pictures, according to Variety. The film will be based on the popular 1980s TV series that starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives in South Florida, originally airing from 1984 to 1989.

Dan Gilroy has been tapped to write the screenplay for the remake, though plot details have not been revealed yet. The original Miami Vice movie adaptation, directed by Michael Mann, was released in 2006, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. While the film achieved cult status, it wasn’t a commercial success in theatres.

Kosinski will not only direct but also produce the remake through his company, Monolith. He will be joined by Dylan Clark, a producer who previously collaborated with Kosinski on the 2016 film Oblivion and worked on the Planet of the Apes series.

The lead cast for the remake has yet to be announced. Kosinski’s upcoming feature F1, starring Brad Pitt, is set to release on June 27, 2025, marking his next major project after Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5 billion globally.

Fans of the original series and the 2006 film adaptation will eagerly await more news as the project takes shape.
