Towel Dance at India Gate! Kolkata Model Slammed On Social Media

November 22, 2024: A video posted by Kolkata-based model Sannati Mitra has ignited a wave of criticism after going viral on social media. The clip, shared on Instagram to mark International Men’s Day, features Mitra dancing in a white towel at Delhi’s iconic India Gate—a site deeply revered for its historical and cultural significance.

The footage, inspired by a famous towel dance from the Bollywood film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, quickly amassed over 2 lakh views, drawing sharp criticism alongside its viral attention.

The Controversial Dance

In the video, Mitra is seen twirling in a towel in full view of passersby, including families and children. At one point, she partially removes the towel, further aggravating viewers who deemed the performance inappropriate for a public setting.

Sharing the video, Mitra captioned it:
“Happy International Men’s Day. May you all continue to inspire and motivate others with your courage, kindness, and empathy.”

However, what was seemingly intended as a lighthearted tribute to men has been widely condemned online. Many social media users accused Mitra of disrespecting the sanctity of India Gate, which honors the memory of fallen martyrs.

Public Backlash

Comments flooded the video, with some branding her act as “cheap publicity” and “vulgarity.” One user demanded legal action, writing, “She has crossed all limits—this is an insult to the nation’s martyrs.” Another added, “India Gate is not a place for such antics. This level of obscenity needs to stop.”

A History of Controversy

This isn’t the first time Mitra has faced backlash for her actions. She previously stirred controversy during Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata, where she posed at a pandal wearing a thigh-high slit black gown. The photo, shared with two other women dressed in similarly revealing outfits, sparked outrage for its perceived disrespect towards the religious event.

Mitra Defends Herself

Amid the growing backlash, Mitra defended her recent video, stating that it was meant as a tribute to men’s kindness and courage. However, her explanation has done little to placate critics, who continue to call for stricter regulations against such acts in public spaces.

The incident has reignited debates over the balance between creative expression and respect for cultural and historical landmarks, with many advocating for better safeguards to preserve the sanctity of such sites.
