“Hollywood, and many other areas within the USA, are being devastated… This is a concerted effort by other nations and, therefore, a National Security threat,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He claimed that such foreign efforts amounted to “messaging and propaganda” and authorized the Department of Commerce and the US Trade Representative to begin the tariff process immediately.

📽️ Global Cultural Tensions Rise

Trump’s latest directive comes just weeks after China announced it would reduce the number of US films imported into its theaters, citing escalating US tariffs and growing discontent among Chinese audiences toward American content.

China’s Film Administration had warned that US trade measures would “reduce favourable impressions of American films” in the country, after Trump hiked tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%.

❓What It Means

While the operational details of such a sweeping film tariff remain unclear, the move could impact global box office dynamics, distribution partnerships, and co-productions involving US studios.

Analysts warn that the tariff could lead to retaliation, shrink cultural exchange, and drive up costs for international movie fans and distributors in the US.
