TV Star Pankaj Dheer (Karna) Dies After Long Cancer Battle in Mumbai

Pankaj Dheer, best known for his unforgettable role as Karna in B. R. Chopra’s Mahabharat, succumbed to illness in Mumbai on Wednesday. His last rites will take place at Vile Parle later today; the film and TV fraternity mourns the veteran’s passing.

October15, 2025: Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, widely celebrated for his unforgettable portrayal of Karna in B. R. Chopra’s epic television series Mahabharat, passed away in Mumbai today after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 68.

The actor, who was a prominent figure in Indian cinema and television for over four decades, was reportedly battling cancer for some time. While he had initially overcome the disease, media reports indicate that his health took a critical turn a few months ago after the cancer relapsed, necessitating major surgery.

The Cine & TV Artistes Association (CINTAA) officially confirmed the demise, issuing a statement that read: “With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing away of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA’s former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025. The cremation will be held today at 4:30 p.m. next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W) Mumbai.”

Born in Punjab on November 9, 1956, Pankaj Dheer began his career in the early 1980s. While his role as the heroic and tragic Karna remains his most iconic, his extensive filmography includes other notable television serials like Chandrakanta (as Raja Shivdutt), The Great Maratha (as Sadashivrao Bhau), and Sasural Simar Ka. He also made a mark in Bollywood films such as Sadak, Baadshah, and Soldier.

Pankaj Dheer is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer, and his son, actor Nikitin Dheer, who is married to television actress Kratika Sengar. Tributes from the fraternity and fans have poured in, mourning the loss of the legendary actor.
