Actor says David Dhawan often gives Govinda references during shoots
March 15, 2026: Varun Dhawan has reunited with his father, filmmaker David Dhawan, for their upcoming film Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hi Hai. While promoting the movie on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Varun opened up about what it is like working under his father’s direction. He joked that he often receives the “most abusive words” from David on set, as the director does not hesitate to openly criticise him if a scene does not meet his expectations.
During the conversation, Varun revealed that his father frequently compares his performances to legendary actors he has worked with in the past. According to the actor, David often imagines how Govinda would perform a scene and then gives similar references during filming. Varun said he understands the challenge but tries to bring his own interpretation to the role instead of copying others, even when comparisons with actors like Salman Khan and Anil Kapoor are mentioned.
David Dhawan also spoke about the difference between earlier and newer generations of actors. He said actors today tend to ask more questions and carefully read scripts before agreeing to projects, unlike earlier times when performers often committed to films without even reading the full story. David has previously delivered several successful films with Govinda, including Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, and Raja Babu.
