Legendary Bollywood actor Manoj Kumar, who carved a niche for himself through his patriotic films and powerful screen presence, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 87. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, where he succumbed to heart-related complications, with decompensated liver cirrhosis cited as the secondary cause of death.

Born Harikrishnan Goswami in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan) in 1937, Manoj Kumar became a household name with his deeply nationalistic roles. He earned the affectionate moniker “Bharat Kumar” for his portrayal of Indian ideals on screen.

He made his Bollywood debut in 1957 with Fashion, but it was Kanch Ki Gudiya (1961), opposite Sayeeda Khan, that brought him recognition. His fame skyrocketed with films like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981), which resonated deeply with audiences for their patriotic themes.
