Born Harikrishnan Goswami in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan) in 1937, Manoj Kumar became a household name with his deeply nationalistic roles. He earned the affectionate moniker “Bharat Kumar” for his portrayal of Indian ideals on screen.
He made his Bollywood debut in 1957 with Fashion, but it was Kanch Ki Gudiya (1961), opposite Sayeeda Khan, that brought him recognition. His fame skyrocketed with films like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Kranti (1981), which resonated deeply with audiences for their patriotic themes.
A recipient of the Padma Shri and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Kumar’s contributions to Indian cinema spanned acting, directing, and writing, making him one of the most revered figures of his generation.
