The actor gained 25 kg for his role as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, with his wife Katrina Kaif now “missing” his look from the film.
New Delhi, February 12: Vicky Kaushal’s upcoming period drama Chhaava is generating buzz ahead of its release, with the actor going through an intense physical transformation for his role as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Gaining 25 kg for the character, Vicky recalled how his wife, Bollywood star Katrina Kaif, reacted to his new look.
“She was very happy, to the point that she now misses ‘Chhaava’! Every time a new poster comes out, she’s the first to like it multiple times and comment, ‘Where has he gone?’” Vicky shared during a promotional event in Delhi.
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced under the Maddock Films banner, Chhaava narrates the legendary story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, beginning with his coronation in 1681. The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in key roles.
Katrina’s Support and Vicky’s Physical Transformation
Preparing for the role was both mentally and physically demanding for Vicky, who dedicated hours to training and rehearsals. He credited Katrina for being incredibly understanding during the shoot.
“When you are shooting non-stop, you barely have time for yourself. With 12 hours on set, two hours of training, and action rehearsals, I’d just come home and crash. But Katrina, being in the industry, completely understood and supported me,” he said.
Once the shoot wrapped up, Vicky wasted no time indulging in his favorite snacks. “I had gol gappe and chaat right after!” he revealed with a smile.
Rashmika Mandanna on Being Cast in Chhaava
Rashmika Mandanna, who plays a significant role in the film, admitted she was initially surprised when approached for the project.
“I don’t know how Laxman sir thought of me for this role. But after seeing the first look and hearing the script, I knew I had to do it,” she shared.
Dance Sequence Controversy
Recently, the makers of Chhaava removed a lezim dance sequence featuring Vicky’s character after objections were raised by Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant and other political figures.
Explaining the decision, Vicky said, “We imagined Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj celebrating his return from war with a traditional dance. However, some people objected, and we decided to respect their sentiments by removing the scene.”
Upcoming Projects
Apart from Chhaava, Vicky is gearing up for Mahavatar, where he sports another striking transformation with a bearded look. Katrina, it seems, is eagerly looking forward to this one as well!
Chhaava is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
