Vicky Kaushal Reveals The Mental Toll Of Playing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj In ‘Chhaava’

February 12, 2025: Actor Vicky Kaushal is set to portray the legendary Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, in the upcoming film Chhaava, which is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025. Known for his commitment to every role, Vicky admits that this has been his toughest yet, due to the immense physical, mental, and emotional preparation required to play such an iconic figure.

Vicky’s dedication to the role was not just about appearance; it was about fully immersing himself in the culture, history, and language of the time. He gained around 25 kg to look the part and underwent rigorous training in horse riding and sword fighting. But the physical transformation was just one aspect. The actor spent months researching Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s histories, meeting with director Laxman Utekar daily to discuss the character in-depth.

The intense training took a toll on Vicky, as he had to fully embody the character even when not filming. “You become silent, stay more focused, and that stays with you for that time,” Vicky explained, acknowledging how such a role affects his mindset even off-set.

Vicky credits his wife, actress Katrina Kaif, for being a constant source of support throughout this transformative journey. She understood the need for space, allowing him to fully dive into the intense process of embodying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. However, Vicky humorously shared that Katrina missed his transformed look once he shed the weight and beard for the role.

Aside from the physical changes, the movie also had some controversies. A dance sequence featuring Sambhaji Maharaj performing the Lezim, a traditional Maharashtrian dance, was removed after political figures, including Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant, raised objections.

Despite these challenges, Vicky is proud of his work in Chhaava. “I’m just happy that I get to say that this is the toughest role I’ve played till date,” he said. He expressed hope that with every role, he will continue to grow not only as an actor but also as a person.

The movie, directed by Laxman Utekar, follows the life of the courageous Maratha ruler from his coronation in 1681. The film also stars Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandana.

Fans can expect an epic portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s life, as Vicky Kaushal brings the brave legacy of the Maratha Empire to the big screen.
