May 28, 2025: Fugitive businessman and former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) owner Vijay Mallya found himself in the middle of a social media storm after posting a congratulatory message for the team’s recent IPL victory. Mallya, who has been in self-imposed exile in London, praised RCB’s win against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) — but fans had a different message for him.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mallya wrote:
“Congratulations to RCB for pulling off a phenomenal win over LSG tonight and setting an IPL record of away wins. Hopefully, strong momentum and return of key players will enable RCB to play bold en route to the IPL Trophy.”

However, the message didn’t sit well with Indian netizens, who flooded the replies with sarcastic and hilarious comments, urging Mallya to return to India. Comments ranged from hopeful to mocking:

  • “Mallya ab toh aajao, RCB jeetegi is baar.”
  • “Himmat hai toh finale dekhne aa jao India mein.”
  • “Sir, trophy uthane hee aa jao India.”

Mallya has been a controversial figure ever since fleeing India in 2016 amid mounting debts and fraud allegations. He is wanted by Indian authorities over loan defaults of more than ₹9,000 crore linked to Kingfisher Airlines. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have active cases against him, and India has been seeking his extradition from the UK.

Despite being away from India, Mallya often posts about RCB, a team he once owned. His public association with the franchise continues to evoke strong reactions, especially given his unresolved legal issues.

RCB’s Performance Uplifts Fans, But Mallya’s Tweet Sparks Memes

RCB’s win over LSG has sparked hope among fans for a strong playoff push this season. Yet, for many, Mallya’s reappearance on social media was an unwelcome reminder of one of India’s most high-profile financial scandals.

As RCB chases its first-ever IPL title, fans seem to have one more request — a surprise guest at the final. Only this time, they’d prefer the guest show up in court before a cricket ground.
