Crime Branch probes Bishnoi gang link as threats to actors raise security concerns
February 20, 2026: A threatening WhatsApp voice note sent to actor Ranveer Singh has been digitally traced to the United States, according to sources. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has initiated contact with US authorities through official channels to obtain details about the number used to send the message. Preliminary findings suggest the voice resembles that of “Harry Boxer,” believed to be associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The note allegedly demanded ₹10 crore, though officials are continuing to gather evidence to substantiate the claim. Security around the actor has since been tightened, and his manager’s statement has been recorded.
The threat reportedly followed gunshots fired outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence earlier this week, an incident that triggered a wider investigation. The firearm used in the shooting has been recovered and sent for forensic examination, while multiple suspects have been taken into custody as part of a multi-state probe.
In a related development, actor Aayush Sharma, brother-in-law of Salman Khan, also received an alleged extortion threat via encrypted email sent through Proton Mail. Investigators traced the digital trail of the email to Sweden and have coordinated with Swedish authorities to verify the sender’s identity. While Sharma’s manager has given a formal statement, no FIR has been registered yet as the investigation continues.
