Warner Bros. Remakes Iconic ‘The Bodyguard’ With New Director And Script

April 12, 2025: Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with a new version of the beloved 1992 romantic thriller The Bodyguard, and they’ve brought in acclaimed director Sam Wrench to helm the project. Wrench, best known for directing the record-breaking Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film, is set to bring a modern touch to the iconic story that originally starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.

The film remake has been in the works for several years, and this announcement marks a significant step toward bringing the project to life. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Abrams—screenwriter of Clint Eastwood’s upcoming film Juror #2—has been tapped to pen the screenplay, taking over from an earlier draft written by Red, White & Royal Blue playwright Matthew López.

While casting details have not yet been announced, the studio’s choice of Wrench signals a fresh creative direction. Known for capturing emotional depth and dazzling visuals in live performances, Wrench is expected to bring cinematic flair and contemporary sensibilities to the romantic thriller.

The original The Bodyguard followed a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) tasked with protecting a famous pop star (Whitney Houston) from a dangerous stalker. The film was a massive box-office success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 1992 and solidifying Houston’s place in film and music history. Her rendition of “I Will Always Love You” became an iconic global hit, defining the film’s legacy.

Directed by Mick Jackson and written by Lawrence Kasdan, the original movie also earned two Academy Award nominations and later inspired a successful stage adaptation, which premiered in London’s West End in 2012.
