Why 'Homebound' is India’s Best Shot at an Oscar in the New Year
The announcement on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, that Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound has officially made the Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature Film has sent a wave of optimism through Indian cinema. For the first time since the shortlist system was introduced, an Indian entry has survived the Academy’s preliminary cut, placing it among the top 15 films globally.
Here is why Homebound is uniquely positioned to break India’s 24-year nomination drought—and perhaps even win the country its first-ever trophy in this category.
Perhaps the biggest advantage Homebound has over previous entries is the presence of Martin Scorsese as an Executive Producer. Scorsese didn’t just lend his name; he actively mentored Ghaywan during pre-production and helped “crispen” the narrative.
Neeraj Ghaywan is already a known name on the international festival circuit. His debut, Masaan, won two major awards at Cannes in 2015.
Historically, many Indian films failed at the Oscars due to lack of promotion. Homebound has no such handicap.
