Will Kate Middleton’s Parents Become Royal Too?

July 6, 2025: As Prince William prepares to one day take the throne, questions continue to swirl about what that might mean for Princess Kate — and her family.

Will Kate Middleton’s Parents Become Royal Too?

While Kate will officially become queen consort when William becomes king, her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, are unlikely to receive any royal titles despite their closeness to the royal family.

Unlike royal spouses of the past, Kate Middleton wasn’t born into aristocracy. Her parents met while working for British Airways — Carole as a flight attendant and Michael as a flight dispatcher — before launching their party supply business, Party Pieces, which helped support the private education of Kate and her siblings, Pippa and James.

After Kate met William at St. Andrews University, the Middletons were gradually drawn into the royal spotlight, attending milestone events such as the 2023 coronation of King Charles, summers at Balmoral Castle, and Royal Ascot appearances. But while they’ve been warmly welcomed, royal titles are traditionally only granted to those born into or marrying into the monarchy — not the extended family of a consort.

Even Queen Camilla’s children don’t hold royal roles or titles. Her sister, Annabel Elliot, assisted her at the coronation but has no formal title. Though Kate could choose to appoint her mother or sister as one of her royal “companions” — the modern version of a lady-in-waiting — that title carries no official nobility.

Despite lacking formal titles, Kate remains deeply close to her family, who live just a short drive from Windsor. Her parents are often seen spending time with her and William’s three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — even hosting frequent sleepovers at their home.

An insider once told PEOPLE, “Her parents are an enduring factor in the upbringing of their grandchildren.”

And while Prince William is also close to his in-laws, he reportedly takes a step back during family game nights. In his memoir Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, James Middleton joked that his dog Ella gave William an “excuse to escape the fiercely competitive nature of the Middleton family,” especially during intense matches of their favorite card game, Racing Demon.
