World’s Most Expensive Film Will Cost $1Billion, Will Have to Out-Earn Jurrasic Park & LOTR Just to Break Even

With $250M in cast salaries and a total cost nearing $1 billion, the upcoming Marvel epic faces a daunting challenge to break even at the box office.

June-3, 2025: When James Cameron’s Titanic set a then-record $200 million budget in the mid-90s, it stunned Hollywood. Now, Marvel Studios has taken that bar to dizzying new heights with their upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, the most expensive film ever made. The production, reportedly costing over $1 billion (including marketing), has already become an industry legend — and it may still need to fight tooth and nail to turn a profit.

According to Collider and Forbes, pre-production alone for Doomsday cost $8 million, dwarfing budgets of previous Marvel titles like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The film’s weekly production costs are reportedly double those of Quantumania, with insiders projecting an unprecedented $500-600 million production spend. This eclipses the record previously held by Star Wars: Episode IX ($447 million).

That’s not even counting the massive cast salaries. Variety has reported that the film’s stacked ensemble of 35 A-list stars, from Robert Downey Jr. to Florence Pugh, is driving the salaries alone to cross $250 million.

Why This Could Still Flop
Even if Avengers: Doomsday clears the $1 billion mark at the global box office, it may still be considered a failure. Factoring in distribution and marketing, the film would need to earn substantially more — surpassing even juggernauts like Jurassic Park ($912 million) and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (average $987 million). In other words, being a billion-dollar blockbuster isn’t enough — this movie must break Avengers: Endgame ($2.8 billion) levels to be truly profitable.

About Avengers: Doomsday
Directed by the Russo Brothers and set for release on December 18, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday is the fifth Avengers movie and the 39th MCU film overall. It boasts a star-studded cast: Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, and the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, among many others.

The epic film will see the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and X-Men join forces against Doctor Doom. But with its mind-boggling costs, this superhero showdown could also be a box-office test of historic proportions.
