‘Would’ve Been a Blockbuster’: Aamir Khan Believes OTT Killed ‘Laapataa Ladies’ Box Office Potential

June 8, 2025: Actor-producer Aamir Khan has opened up about the underwhelming box office performance of his 2024 production, Laapataa Ladies. In a recent interview, Khan candidly admitted that the film’s early debut on Netflix — just eight weeks after its theatrical release — might have significantly impacted its theatrical earnings.

“Ultimately, it’s the box office that gives you a very definite yardstick,” Aamir said. “Reviews are subjective — some people like a film, some don’t. But the box office is unemotional. It clearly tells you how much a film has earned.” He added that strong word-of-mouth could have propelled Laapataa Ladies to much greater success had it not streamed so soon. “According to me, if it hadn’t gone to Netflix so soon, it would have been a huge success.”

Released in cinemas on March 1, 2024, and on Netflix by April 26, Laapataa Ladies earned ₹24.31 crore gross in India and ₹27.06 crore globally. The film, directed by Kiran Rao, is a satirical comedy-drama set in rural India. It tells the story of two brides who are accidentally swapped during a train journey, offering a poignant yet humorous critique of gender roles and patriarchy.

The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. It was produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios.

Looking ahead, Aamir Khan is set to return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par, which also stars Genelia Deshmukh. The film is scheduled for release on June 20, 2025.
