Directed by Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai’s Suparn Verma, the film explores one of India’s most debated legal battles on women’s rights and personal law.
Mumbai (Maharashtra), April 23:
Actors Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi are set to headline a powerful new legal thriller inspired by the historic Shah Bano vs Ahmed Khan case — a turning point in India’s legal discourse on the rights of Muslim women.
The film, helmed by Suparn S Verma (best known for Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai), has reportedly completed its shooting schedule across Lucknow and other parts of Uttar Pradesh and is expected to release later this year.
In the upcoming film, Emraan Hashmi will portray a character inspired by Shah Bano’s husband, while Yami Gautam takes on the challenging role of the protagonist, echoing the resilience and legal struggle of Shah Bano.
A Case That Shaped Indian Legal History
The 1985 Supreme Court verdict in the Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum case became a legal milestone in India’s secular and gender justice framework. Shah Bano, a 62-year-old Muslim woman, had petitioned for maintenance from her husband after divorce under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The Supreme Court ruled in her favor, igniting a nationwide debate.
However, the decision led to political backlash, prompting the Rajiv Gandhi-led government to pass the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act in 1986, effectively overturning the judgment and sparking one of the most controversial intersections of religion, politics, and gender rights in Indian history.
Behind the Scenes
While plot specifics remain under wraps, insiders suggest the film will not only delve into the courtroom drama but also spotlight the personal, societal, and religious complexities surrounding the case.
Given Suparn Verma’s track record in courtroom storytelling and Yami Gautam’s recent critically-acclaimed performances in Lost and Article 370, the project promises to be both thought-provoking and emotionally powerful.
The film is slated for a late 2024 release. More cast and production details are expected to be revealed soon.
