Yosuke Kubozuka Joins Cross-Cultural Mystery Drama Gomusin, Set Across Japan, UK, and South Korea

May 19, 2025 : Acclaimed Japanese actor Yosuke Kubozuka has officially joined the cast of Gomusin, an upcoming international film that will span Japan, the UK, and South Korea. The film is scheduled to begin production in 2026.

According to Deadline, Gomusin marks the debut project from Average Plus Productions, a newly launched label by former Fremantle drama executive Nastasja Borgeot. The film will be co-produced with Japan’s Generation 11, and is set to be directed by Bryerly Long.

Kubozuka, a Japanese Academy Award winner, is widely known for his roles in HBO’s Tokyo Vice, the BBC-Netflix series Giri/Haji, and Martin Scorsese’s Silence. In Gomusin, he will portray Akio, a Japanese man of Korean descent with a hidden past.

The story follows Amiya, a British woman of Japanese and Korean heritage, who receives a mysterious package at her London home — an old Korean shoe known as a gomusin, engraved with the word “Tokyo” and addressed to her late father. Her journey to uncover the shoe’s origin leads her to Japan, where she meets Akio and begins to unravel complex threads of history, identity, and intergenerational memory.

Director-producer Nastasja Borgeot, who conceived the original idea, describes Gomusin as a story that “relates to a seldom-discussed chapter of Japanese history.”

“It is a narrative marked by pain, but more importantly, by the quiet strength that led to reconciliation and harmony,” Borgeot said. “The stories from this period continue to echo through generations, subtly shaping the cultural and political landscape of the region today.”

With its emotionally rich premise and globally rooted cast and crew, Gomusin is poised to be a poignant cinematic exploration of history, heritage, and healing.
