Following a standout performance against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), Eoin Morgan, England’s World Cup-winning captain, has praised Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, calling him a “classy player”.
CSK maintained their stronghold at their home ground, securing an effortless victory and putting an end to KKR’s winning streak in this year’s IPL.
In pursuit of a modest target of 138 set by KKR, Gaikwad showcased his skill, leading the chase with an unbeaten 67 and hitting the decisive runs for Chennai.
He adeptly timed his innings, navigating the chase with precision and securing the win for his team with a boundary.
During a conversation with JioCinema, Morgan commended Gaikwad’s performance, asserting that such an innings would greatly boost his confidence.
Morgan emphasized, “This innings will significantly bolster his belief and confidence in his gameplay. Delivering a performance like this early in the tournament will affirm his strategic choices and convey a strong message to his team. He’s been known as a classy player, and it’s wonderful to witness his form. Today, he excelled in all aspects, from winning the toss to his captaincy decisions, including introducing spinners after the powerplay. His leadership was outstanding.”
The match recap highlights Gaikwad’s strategic decision to bowl first, which was validated by the bowlers’ performance, particularly Ravindra Jadeja’s remarkable spell of 3/18 that restricted KKR to 137/9 in their 20 overs. Jadeja, alongside Deshpande, who also took three wickets, were pivotal in keeping KKR’s total manageable.
Chasing 138, Gaikwad’s masterful unbeaten 67 anchored Chennai’s chase, while Shivam Dube’s quick 28 off 18 balls propelled CSK to their third win of the season, effectively ending KKR’s series of victories.
