Chris Anderson criticises Elon Musk’s recent social media activity, urging him to embrace responsible communication on X.
January 8, 2025: In a strongly-worded open letter, TED Chief Chris Anderson addressed Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X (formerly Twitter), raising concerns about Musk’s recent social media posts. Anderson warned that Musk’s inflammatory remarks and accusations against political figures and public personalities could have dangerous real-world consequences, even leading to loss of lives.

Anderson accused Musk of disregarding the core principles of journalism, particularly the fairness doctrine, which emphasizes verifying claims and offering individuals or institutions a chance to respond before making critical public accusations.
“When you tell hundreds of millions of people that someone should be hanged or jailed for outrageous crimes against humanity, just possibly you should first sound out what those who know those people really well would say about them. Some of your recent posts could literally get someone killed,” Anderson wrote.
With a certain amount of trepidation, I'm posting this open letter to @elonmusk, someone I have admired, but who, right now, is causing me concern. I know I'm not alone in thinking these thoughts. Criticism of Musk’s Approach
Anderson noted that while Musk often raises important issues, the tone and delivery of his posts come across as “playground bullying”, undermining their credibility and impact.
“You’re hearing the cheers of your most loyal followers, but missing the fact you’re making yourself a laughing stock among many who you really want on your side. Long-term, that’s going to damage X, your other businesses, and indeed your long-term dreams for humanity,” Anderson added.

Call for Responsible Behaviour
Anderson urged Musk to thoughtfully edit his posts and adopt a more measured approach to public discourse. He highlighted that Musk’s influential platform requires a sense of responsibility to avoid spreading misinformation or inciting harm.
“No one wants to follow a playground bully to Mars,” Anderson remarked sharply.
A Plea for Reflection
While critical of Musk’s recent behavior, Anderson maintained that he admires Musk’s achievements and visionary leadership. He appealed to Musk’s sense of responsibility, asking him to “loosen the grip on power” and present a better face of X.
“I miss the old Elon. You can be funny, interesting, insightful, and inspiring. But I also know that you understand the danger of holding too tightly to the ring of power, how it can distort someone’s judgment and turn them ugly,” Anderson concluded.
As of now, Elon Musk has not responded to Anderson’s letter.
