Following his Olympic gold medal win, Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic expressed his gratitude and joy by thanking God for helping him achieve this significant milestone in his illustrious career. Djokovic realized his ultimate dream by defeating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final in Paris on Sunday.
Djokovic said, “God is great. Thank God. I am super proud, super happy.”
The 24-time Grand Slam champion celebrated his victory by proudly holding the Serbian flag. Overcome with emotion, Djokovic fell to his knees with tears of joy streaming down his face after securing the game point. The stadium echoed with chants of “Djokovic” as the Serbian star climbed into the stands to celebrate with his family. Alcaraz, who played a commendable match, took home the silver medal following Djokovic’s 7-6, 7-6 victory.
This gold medal win marks a significant addition to Djokovic’s already impressive career, which includes 24 Grand Slam titles—more than any other player in both men’s and women’s tennis. His Grand Slam victories include 10 Australian Open titles, three French Open titles, seven Wimbledon titles, and four US Open titles. With this Olympic gold, Djokovic has completed a career golden slam.
Djokovic has also amassed a total of 72 major titles in tennis, surpassing the achievements of his contemporaries, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, to lead the modern-day ‘Big Three’. His titles include 40 ATP Masters and seven ATP Finals championships. Nadal follows with 59 major titles, including 22 Grand Slams, while Federer has 54 major titles, including 20 Grand Slams.
The gold medal match against Alcaraz was filled with thrilling moments, showcasing Djokovic’s precision and Alcaraz’s powerful aces. This victory solidifies Djokovic’s status as one of the greatest players in the history of tennis.
