Graeme Smith, a former captain of South Africa and SA20 commissioner, stated that it will be difficult for the Indian coaches and selection committee to strike a balance between experience and youth in the WC squad, amid speculation surrounding the availability of senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the forthcoming T20 World Cup. In a significant move for the team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024, the veteran duo of Kohli and Rohit returned to India’s T20I lineup for the first time since the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. The US and the West Indies will co-host the competition, which begins on June 1. India have been placed in Group A alongside Ireland, Pakistan, Canada and the US.
The T20I format has seen many young players make a lasting impression for India, making selection a difficult task for the selectors. Rohit has recently struggled in the shorter format, while Kohli has been in incredible T20 form for India in the IPL. With scores of 765 and 597 runs, respectively, they were India’s top two scorers in the most recent ODI World Cup. Smith stated that the coaches and panel of India must evaluate the talent they wish to have in their T20 World Cup team, and given the talent they currently possess, this is a tough decision to make.
“With the quantity of cricket India plays, it’s about giving opportunity to the player by balancing workloads and introducing new players at different times.” We have witnessed a significant amount of talent for India come through the IPL in this format. To play on those kinds of pitches, I believe the selection committee and coaches need to decide which Indian stars and squads they want to field. We’ll have to wait and see how they assemble the team. It’s a tough decision to make with the amount of talent India has today. Smith told ANI, “I think striking a balance between some experience with youth and how they go about that.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared last year that cricket will return to the multi-sport extravaganza in Los Angeles in 2028, after being absent for 128 years. According to the former captain of South Africa, cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics is a major attempt to draw interest from other nations and presents a significant opportunity for the sport to challenge football as the most popular global sport.
“I suppose for me We are all interested in safeguarding test cricket. The growth of the future is T20 cricket. With the World Cup approaching, LA2028 is a major effort to entice other countries to advance in the game. We want cricket to become more powerful and larger. In my opinion, cricket has a genuine chance to compete with football as a global sport. I’m eager to watch how that turns out. The former captain of South Africa predicted that LA28 would be an incredibly exciting time for cricket players to be exposed to the Olympics.
