Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh has returned home to Punjab to celebrate a significant milestone—his team’s bronze medal victory at the Paris Olympics. The reunion with his family was captured in a heartfelt video shared by Hockey India’s official X account.
On Thursday, Harmanpreet Singh played a pivotal role in securing the bronze medal for India, as the team triumphed 2-1 over Spain in a thrilling match at the Yves du Manoir Stadium in France. Singh’s two crucial goals (30′ and 33′) and PR Sreejesh’s crucial saves ensured the victory. Spain’s lone goal was scored by Marc Miralles (18′).
Under the strategic leadership of coach Craig Fulton, the Indian hockey team created history by winning back-to-back bronze medals at the Olympics. This achievement marks the first time in 52 years that India has won consecutive bronze medals in hockey, with the last occurrence being at the 1972 Munich Games.
In an electrifying atmosphere, the Indian team made a remarkable comeback after trailing 0-1 in the first quarter. Sreejesh, playing his final game for India, was visibly emotional as he celebrated this landmark achievement with his teammates on the field.
Harmanpreet Singh’s performance throughout the tournament was exceptional. He emerged as the top goal-scorer with 10 goals in eight matches, surpassing Australia’s Blake Govers, who scored seven goals. This achievement underscores Singh’s crucial role in India’s successful campaign at the Paris Olympics.
As Harmanpreet Singh reunites with his family, the hockey community and fans celebrate this historic accomplishment, marking a new chapter in India’s hockey legacy.
