“Have too much respect for him”: Harshal Patel on not celebrating Dhoni’s dismissal

In a significant moment during the IPL 2024 match on Sunday, Punjab Kings (PBKS) bowler Harshal Patel dismissed the legendary former skipper of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni, for a golden duck. Despite the importance of the wicket in the context of the game, Harshal chose not to celebrate, citing immense respect for Dhoni.

Harshal delivered a strong performance, securing three wickets while conceding only 24 runs in his four-over spell, achieving an impressive economy rate of 6.00. His crucial dismissal of Dhoni occurred during the 19th over, which potentially shifted the momentum of the match.

Reflecting on his decision after the innings, Harshal shared his thoughts on the pitch conditions and his bowling strategy, as well as his respect for Dhoni. “Wicket was on the drier side. I have too much respect for him to celebrate when I get him out,” he stated. Harshal further explained the technical aspects of his bowling in the day’s conditions, “One of the advantages of playing a day game is that the square is quite rough. So the ball starts reversing. In my first over it was reversing. It’s all about the feel of that delivery (slower one). More you bowl the better you get. Most batters don’t pick it. Have been practicing in the nets, and when it comes out it gives you great results.”

This moment of sportsmanship and mutual respect highlights the deep admiration players hold for Dhoni, underscoring the spirit of cricket that transcends competitive boundaries.
