Health: 5-Super food to stay healthy during Winters

Nature’s bountiful and abundant and it provisions for variety and diversity with adequate and relevant flora, fauna, seasons and more!

One of its many wonders is winters; harsh in certain areas and pleasant and benign in others.

The glory of winters lies in its white manna, steely haze, feeble sunlight and wonderful foods to go with it.

The winter foods are full of minerals and vitamins, carbohydrates, fats and fibres that boost our immunity and protect us from winter related ailments.

Dr. Shalini Garwin Bliss, of Manipal Hospitals, talks about 5 main Winter Super Foods and how they affect us positively!

First on the list is:

  1. Desi Ghee: Desi Ghee is an easily digestable fat that is extremely beneficial for us, if consumed in moderation. Consumption of 1 tea spoon of Desi Ghee, daily, is ideal.
    It is a great source of energy and also keeps our body warm.

Deși Ghee îs yum when applied on Roti, or as tadka on Rice or Dal. Temper the quantity and enjoy its taste and keep fit, but diabetics and people suffering from High Blood Pressure should take diligent advice before partaking it.

  1. Sweet Potato- Shakar Kandi: This winter food when roasted on coal and sprinkled with Chat Masala, lime juice and salt makes for a tasty winters’ day treat.
    But did you know that this food is full of the goodness of fibres- both soluble and insoluble.
    It is great to alleviate constipation and maintain sugar and blood cholesterol levels.
    It is also a source of good carbs and helps maintain your weight.
  2. Jaggery- Gud: jaggery has the highest amount of Iron with impressive quantities of Potassium and other minerals as well!
    You can replace sugar with jaggery in your daily intake of sweet in tea, sweet dish and more.
    It helps keep your body warm and is a great source of comfort during winters.
  3. Millets or Cereals- Ragi, jowar, Bajra are some popular millets that are easily available across India.
    Replace gluten heavy foods with millets as they are healthy source of good and complex carbohydrates, fibre, minerals such as Vitamin-A.

The great quality of Millets is that they slowly release sugar in the body and can easily replace gluten rich foods for Diabetics as well.

  1. Amla- Is rich is Vitamin-C that helps build immunity and fight against infections. You can consume Amla as a murabba or take its juice or savour Amla candies.
    Eating Gud and Amla together helps in better absorption of Iron by the body.
