Covid Resurgence? India Detects Two New Variants, Here’s What You Need to Know
May 27, 2025: India has confirmed the detection of two new COVID-19 variants—LF.7 and NB.1.8.1—amid rising cases across the country. As of May 26, there are 1,009 active COVID-19 cases, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
The NB.1.8.1 variant was detected in Tamil Nadu in April, while four cases of LF.7 were found in Gujarat in May.
Both LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 are descendants of the JN.1 variant, which itself is part of the Omicron lineage. JN.1 is a sub-lineage of BA.2.86, known for its high transmissibility and generally mild to moderate symptoms. Like other Omicron-related variants, LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 are considered highly contagious but less severe, particularly in healthy individuals.
However, elderly individuals and those with compromised immune systems remain at high risk for complications.
While the World Health Organization (WHO) has not classified LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 as “Variants of Concern” or “Variants of Interest,” they are currently listed as “Variants Under Monitoring”. This means health authorities are closely observing their spread and impact.
Experts are urging the public to remain vigilant.
“Amid the resurgence of COVID-19, it is important to practice routine precautions. This includes wearing a mask, particularly in crowded or enclosed spaces, and frequent handwashing,” said Dr. Sharad Joshi, Director & HOD of Pulmonology and Paediatric Pulmonology at Max Healthcare.
He also recommended avoiding non-essential travel, crowded areas, and large gatherings to prevent further spread.
Currently, there is no government recommendation for an additional booster dose in response to these new variants.
“We must wait for official guidelines and proper research. Until then, following standard precautions is crucial,” added Dr. Joshi.
A similar surge in COVID-19 cases has also been reported in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong, where health authorities are closely monitoring hospital admissions and wastewater data for early signs of outbreaks.
