Rising Concerns Over HMPV Cases in India: Symptoms, Precautions, and Expert Insights

"Over 15 cases of Human Metapneumovirus detected in India as officials urge calm and focus on prevention."

India has reported over 15 cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) this season, with cases detected across several states, including Puducherry (3 cases), Gujarat (5 cases), and Assam, which recently reported its first case. What is HMPV?

First identified in 2001, HMPV is a respiratory virus that primarily affects children under five, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. It spreads through respiratory droplets, especially during winter and early spring. While the virus is not life-threatening for most, it can lead to severe conditions in some cases.

Key Symptoms of HMPV

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), common symptoms of HMPV include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Body aches
  • Headaches

In severe cases, it may result in complications like pneumonia or bronchitis, accompanied by:

  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Severe fatigue
  • Persistent fever

Precautions and Prevention

Health experts recommend taking simple precautions to reduce the risk of HMPV infection:

  1. Wear masks in crowded spaces.
  2. Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
  3. Avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals.
  4. Maintain a healthy diet to strengthen immunity.
  5. Practice social distancing and good respiratory hygiene.

WHO advises seeking medical attention if severe symptoms arise. Doctors emphasize that there is no specific treatment for HMPV, and care typically involves managing symptoms using over-the-counter medications, inhalers, and hydration.

Expert Opinions

Dr. Aabid Amin Bhat, Medical Director at Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, stated, "HMPV is not a new virus. Understanding its symptoms, taking precautions, and adhering to protocols are key to managing its spread effectively."

Dr. Meenu Singh, Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, added, “HMPV generally affects children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions. While it requires attention, there’s no need for excessive isolation. Proper hydration and timely assessment of symptoms are critical.”

India’s Preparedness

Haryana Health Minister Arti Singh Rao reassured the public, saying, “We are ready. All districts have been instructed to stay vigilant. The virus can spread, but it is not dangerous and can be treated effectively.”

Similarly, Union Health Minister JP Nadda emphasized, “HMPV is not new and has been circulating worldwide for years. Health surveillance systems in India remain vigilant, and there’s no evidence of a surge in respiratory viral pathogens. Citizens should not worry but stay cautious.”

Global Perspective

In China, respiratory infections caused by known pathogens, including HMPV, are declining. Wang Liping from the Chinese CDC highlighted that no new infectious diseases have emerged and credited advanced detection techniques for identifying the virus more effectively.

Conclusion

While HMPV cases are being reported in India, health officials and experts stress the importance of awareness, precautionary measures, and timely medical consultation. With no available vaccines or targeted treatments, prevention remains the best defense against this respiratory virus.
