Angelina Jolie Opens Up About Her Darkest Days Post-Brad Pitt Divorce: “I Had to Come Alive Again”

After years away from the spotlight, Angelina Jolie shares her emotional journey of healing and rediscovery through her comeback role in Maria.

December 21, 2024: Angelina Jolie is making a powerful return to the silver screen with her performance in Maria, a biographical drama directed by Pablo Larraín about the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. The role marks not only her return to acting but also a significant personal milestone after a long period of emotional darkness following her highly publicized divorce from Brad Pitt.

In a recent interview with E! News, Jolie opened up about the challenging years she faced. “I went very dark for reasons I’d rather not explain, but I didn’t have a lot of light and life within me,” she admitted. The actress revealed that her focus during those years was primarily on her family, and her professional decisions were often driven by practicality rather than creativity.

“I needed to be home more,” Jolie explained, emphasizing the emotional and logistical hurdles she faced while raising her six children amidst ongoing legal battles with Pitt.

Her performance in Maria represents a deeply personal turning point. Jolie described the role as “the beginning of starting to come alive again,” crediting the support of kind people around her for helping her through her healing process.

Despite stepping back from acting, Jolie remained creatively active. She co-produced the Broadway musical The Outsiders, which premiered in April 2024, and directed the critically acclaimed war drama Without Blood, which earned praise at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Jolie’s children have also played key roles in her recent projects. Her daughter Vivienne worked as an assistant on The Outsiders, while sons Maddox and Pax assisted behind the scenes on Maria.
