The actress reflects on her vulnerability during filming and how her eldest sons witnessed her raw emotions like never before.
December 20, 2024: Angelina Jolie’s latest film, Maria, not only marks a significant milestone in her career but also allowed her eldest sons, Maddox (23) and Pax (21), to witness a side of their mother they had never seen before. Serving as production assistants on the biopic, the Jolie-Pitt brothers saw their mother express deep emotional honesty during the film’s intense moments, breaking the usual parental instinct to hide pain from their children.

Emotional Vulnerability on Set
In an interview with the BBC, Jolie admitted, “They’ve seen me go through a lot of things, but they hadn’t experienced me expressing a lot of the pain that usually a parent hides from a child.” While working on the emotionally charged Maria, Jolie found herself unable to hold back her feelings.

The Maleficent actress shared how her sons turned into her confidantes during these heavy moments. “They were there to witness some of that,” she said. “…Then we would hug, or they would bring me cups of tea.”
In her August interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie described the experience as transformative: “It really meant a lot that my boys were with me on Maria. Usually, when I’m expressing that much pain, it’s not in front of my children. You really try to hide from your children how much pain and sadness you carry.”
Family Support Amid Legal Battles
Jolie’s openness about her emotional journey comes amid her ongoing legal clash with ex-husband Brad Pitt, which has dominated headlines since their high-profile split in 2016. Their six children—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne—have often shown their support for Jolie throughout the legal battles.
At the New York premiere of Maria, Jolie was joined by Maddox, Pax, and Zahara, showcasing a united family front.
Pax’s Next Steps in Filmmaking
Following his role as a production assistant on Maria, Pax is set to work as the third assistant director on Jolie’s upcoming high-fashion drama, Stitches. The film, currently being shot in Paris, marks yet another step in the 21-year-old’s budding filmmaking career.
