Shivan & Narresh Apologize for Gulmarg Fashion Show Amidst Ramzan Controversy
Mumbai, March 11: Renowned fashion designers Shivan and Narresh issued a public apology on Monday following intense backlash over their fashion event in Gulmarg, which was held during the holy month of Ramzan.
The show, which celebrated the ski and après-ski lifestyle, drew widespread criticism from political leaders and locals in Jammu & Kashmir, who deemed it disrespectful and culturally insensitive.
Taking to social media, the designers expressed regret over the event, stating that they never intended to offend religious sentiments.
“We deeply regret any hurt caused by our recent presentation in Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramzan. Our sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski & après-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any religious sentiments,” the designers posted on X.
Acknowledging the concerns of the local community, they further promised to be more mindful and respectful in the future.
“Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologize for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful,” they added.
The controversy has sparked sharp political reactions, with leaders from Jammu & Kashmir slamming the event and calling for accountability.
Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the Gulmarg fashion show, emphasizing that it was inappropriate to hold such an event, particularly during Ramzan.
“A private party was organized, a fashion show took place there. From what I saw, it should not have been organized at any time of the year, let alone during Ramzan,” Abdullah said in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly.
He clarified that the event was not sanctioned by the government, adding that necessary action would be taken if any laws were violated.
“It was a private party, and no permission was taken from us. Instructions have been given that if anything against the law has happened, action should be taken. If necessary, it should be handed over to the police for investigation,” he stated.
Several political and religious leaders voiced their strong disapproval of the event, calling it a direct attack on local culture and traditions.
Jammu & Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party MLA Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh condemned the show, calling it shameful.
“During Ramzan, organizing such an event is shameful; this is a direct attack on our culture. We strongly condemn this and demand strict action from the Chief Minister,” he stated.
National Conference MLA Tanvir Sadiq also denounced the fashion show, emphasizing that such “semi-nude” events have no place in Jammu & Kashmir.
“Jammu & Kashmir is a place of Sufi saints. Even in normal circumstances, semi-nude shows should not take place here. This is not acceptable,” Sadiq told ANI.
Additionally, Jammu & Kashmir Minister Sakina Itoo echoed similar sentiments, stating that the event was wrong and should have never taken place during Ramzan.
“What happened in Gulmarg is wrong, and it should not have happened, especially during the holy month of Ramzan,” she remarked.
The controversy surrounding the Gulmarg fashion show has ignited a larger debate on cultural sensitivity and responsibility in public events. While the designers have apologized, many are calling for stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
It remains to be seen whether any further action will be taken by the authorities regarding the event organizers or the venue management.
