Wendy Williams Denounces Ex-Husband Kevin Hunter’s $250 Million Lawsuit Filed in Her Name
Wendy Williams has strongly distanced herself from a massive $250 million lawsuit filed by her ex-husband Kevin Hunter in her name—without her knowledge or consent. In a candid statement to TMZ on Thursday, June 19, Williams said she had “no idea” Hunter was initiating legal action on her behalf against her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, and the presiding judge in her guardianship case, Lisa Sokoloff, and made it clear: “I don’t want him in my life like that—because I’m divorced forever.”
Kevin Hunter, who was married to Williams for over two decades before their 2019 divorce, filed a bombshell $250 million lawsuit on June 17. The lawsuit names 48 defendants, including Morrissey, Judge Lisa Sokoloff, Wells Fargo, and Williams’ assisted living facility, accusing them of violating Williams’ constitutional rights and keeping her in prolonged guardianship.
But Williams was quick to condemn the move:
“He’s a money-grubber; he’s always been that way,” she told TMZ.
“It’s good to know that he’s doing such evil things—again.”
Her attorney, Joe Tacopina, confirmed that Williams had no prior knowledge of the lawsuit and is deeply displeased with Hunter’s actions.
“He has no standing to add her name to the lawsuit or any authority from Wendy whatsoever,” Tacopina said in a statement to PEOPLE.
“We certainly don’t need his help. So thanks, but no thanks.”
According to the court filing, Hunter isn’t seeking to end Williams’ guardianship altogether but is asking for:
Hunter has also filed to be named Williams’ “next friend,” a legal designation allowing someone to act on behalf of a person deemed incapable of representing themselves when no appropriate guardian is doing so.
LaShawn Thomas, Hunter’s attorney, admitted that Williams isn’t involved in the lawsuit and is not aware of all the evidence.
“Unfortunately, she is not legally aware of all the evidence that supports our claims,” Thomas told PEOPLE.
“I plan on laying out sufficient evidence to support our claims and ensure that her rights are vindicated and she is made whole financially.”
Wendy Williams has been under legal guardianship since spring 2022, with Sabrina Morrissey having full access to her personal and financial affairs. In February 2024, Williams’ team revealed her diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Despite these challenges, Williams has expressed clear desires to regain control over her life. In a rare January 16 interview with Charlamagne Tha God on The Breakfast Club, she said:
“I am not cognitively impaired but I feel like I am in prison… This system is broken. I don’t have access to my money. For the last three years, I have been caught up in the system.”
